Frequently Asked Questions

Hope we’re able to answer some of your most popular questions.

How Many Chickens should I buy to provide enough eggs for my family?

Firstly you should check your local council website for rules around numbers of chickens allowed in your backyard. Most councils allow between 4-6 chickens with a no roosters allowed rule. Now, if you love cooking and use a lot of eggs to bake plus you eat eggs daily then we would recommend 1 chicken per household member, that would make about 42 eggs a week if they all lay at once, that is a lot of eggs to go through but we find most families can get away with 3-4 chickens.

How do I raise my chick from one day old?

Chicks up to 5-6 weeks of age will need a brooder to keep them warm but from 7 weeks on you can start the transition process to you coop by removing the heat with your babies being able to go outside at 8 weeks of age.

Read Our Step-By-Step Guide On The 5 Things Every Chick Needs To Survive Now.

How old will my new chickens be when they start to lay eggs?

Most breeds of chickens start laying between 24-26 weeks depending on their breed and the season. Laying generally beings as the daylight hours start to lengthen, so if you buy your chickens in winter and they are 22 weeks old they may not start laying until mid spring. This is even when they are only a few weeks off point of lay at the time of purchase. One exception to this rule is the Chinese Silkie which are normally winter layers.

What should I feed my chickens?

Chickens should be fed a complete feed in the form of a crumble, pellet or mixed grains, there are many products available on the market. What you feed your chooks depends on the age of the chickens.

Chicks – Chick Starter Crumble

Growers (6-18 weeks) – Pullet Grower

Point of lay Pullets – Layer pellets

You can also feed scratch mix to your girls, they will love finding all the different grains.

Chickens also love fresh green grass, fruit and vegies, bugs and worms.

What breed of chicken should I buy?

Now, that is a tough question. All heritage breeds are great so the choice is really about colour, feather pattern and size. Do you like spots, stripes, lacing, crazy hair doo’s, feathers on their feet, tall, round, short, black, red, white, lavender or a combo of all of these.

Some people like opening the fridge to see a rainbow of egg colours consisting of eggs in blue, green, cream, white and several shades of brown. We have them all so just ask us and we will help you to make the best selection of chickens to cover every option.

What happens if I get a rooster?

When purchasing chicks from us we like to give you a reassurance that you won’t be stuck with a mistake so we have put in place a rooster return policy.

If your egg laying beauty ends up cock-a-doodle-doing please make contact with us and we will take your boy off your hands and give you a refund or a credit towards another chick/chicken to the value of the purchase price of the bird you originally bought. E.g. You purchase a day old for $25, you return the rooster and your get a refund or a credit to the value of $25.
